Activist Manoj Jarange has announced he is withdrawing his 17-day-old fast undertaken over the Maratha quota issue, but insisted he would continue his agitation until the Maharashtra government starts issuing Kunbi caste certificates.
Maratha quota stir: Internet services were suspended in Jalna, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, and Beed districts, citing concerns over potential unrest fueled by social media rumours.
The Maharashtra State Socially and Educationally Backward Bill 2024 providing 10 per cent reservation for the Maratha community in education and government jobs was passed unanimously by the state legislature in the special session.
The Kunbi community falls in the Other Backward Classes (OBC) category, and Jarange has been demanding that Kunbi certificates be issued to all Marathas.
The decision to hold the session was taken at the weekly Cabinet meeting presided over by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde after Maratha quota activist Manoj Jarange Patil went on a hunger strike at Antarwali Saarati village in Jalna district.
“The government should convene a special session of the state legislature in two days and bring legislation concerning sage soyare (blood relatives). The government must issue (OBC) caste certificates to 57 lakh people who possess Kunbi records," quota activist Manoj Jarange had said on Saturday.
Union Minister Narayan Rane voiced his dissatisfaction regarding the Maharashtra government's decision to extend all privileges afforded to the OBCs to the Maratha community until they secure reservation.
This move comes in response to the Maharashtra government's decision regarding the Maratha quota, highlighting a rift within the government.
Maratha quota row: Manoj Jarange Patil also urged the Maharashtra Government to withdraw all the cases registered by the police regarding the demand for Maratha reservation in the state.
Jarange Patil on November 2 ended his indefinite fast after a delegation from the Maharashtra government met him and ensured the passage Maratha Reservation Bill in the assembly.
The development has come ahead of the Maharashtra Cabinet meeting on November 8. The state government has also been given a deadline by Maratha activist Manoj Jarange to take a call on quota.
The decision comes a day after Chief Minister Eknath Shinde said a government-appointed committee scrutinised 1.72 crore old documents and among them, 11,530 records were found where Kunbi caste was mentioned.
With protests turning violent in some parts of the state, Maharashtra CM Eknath Shinde called an all-party meeting today. The leaders adopted a resolution in the meeting unanimously stating that all parties are for the reservation to the community. It also condemned the violence in the state.
Maratha quota stir: After the all-party meeting in Mumbai, chief minister Shinde said a resolution was passed asking Jarange to call off his fast. The government needs time for legal modalities to implement the reservation and Jarange should cooperate, he said.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has reaffirmed his government's commitment to providing job and education reservations for the Maratha community, while also urging the youth not to resort to extreme measures like suicide.
Maharashtra: After attending a meeting of the representatives of the OBC community, CM Eknath Shinde asserted that "there will be no injustice to OBC or other communities."
Maratha quota activist Manoj Jarange began his hunger strike seeking OBC quota for Marathas at Antarwali Sarati village in Jalna district on August 29.
Maratha reservation row: Deputy CM on Saturday stressed that the state government is seeking to restore the reservation for the Maratha community which is different from the OBC quota.
The activist was on an indefinite hunger strike since August 29 demanding reservation in jobs and education under the Other Backward Classes (OBC) category for the Maratha community.
