Two major spells of weak monsoon prevailed over the country -- from August 9-16 and August 23-27 -- when northwest, central, and adjoining peninsular and west coast of India had subdued rainfall activities.
According to the MeT Department, the monsoon will remain active in most parts of east Rajasthan for the next three-four days, while conditions are favourable for active monsoon at some places in the western part of the state.
With water flowing over highways, road connectivity was snapped in several areas.
The weatherman issued a 'yellow' warning (be updated) for 14 districts in south and coastal Odisha and warned fishermen against venturing into the sea on Wednesday.
The India Meteorological Department on Sunday issued a warning for Maharashtra forecasting heavy to very heavy torrential rains with thunderstorms in the state till September 9.
So far this year, Gujarat has recorded deficient rainfall of 50 percent, with the state receiving 288.6 millimetres of rain as against normal rainfall of 576.5 mm for the period, the IMD said.
The shortfalls in two successive months in the four-month Southwest Monsoon season from June 1 to September 30 have triggered fear of a below normal monsoon this year.
Enhanced rainfall activity is very likely over south peninsular India till August 30. It is likely to reduce thereafter, the IMD added.
According to the disaster management department, the associated cyclonic circulation extends up to mid-tropospheric level and is tilting southwards with height.
IMD has issued a yellow alert for 10 districts on Friday. It has also issued a heavy rainfall alert for few Kerala districts on Saturday and Sunday.
The IMD said the entire monsoon trough lies close to the foothills of the Himalayas. It is likely to remain there till August 26.
The IMD has also predicted an enhanced rainfall activity over the northeast, sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim, and Bihar from August 24.
The orange alert, which is valid till Sunday morning, has been issued for 24 districts, including Dhar, Ratlam, Ujjain and Dewas districts, PK Saha, a senior meteorologist with the IMD's Bhopal office, said.
There will be a gradual increase in rainfall activity over northwest India and Bihar with fairly widespread to widespread rainfall, with isolated heavy falls, very likely over Bihar, east Uttar Pradesh, and Uttarakhand till August 23, it said in a release.
Delhi has recorded just 63.2 mm rainfall against the normal of 157.1 mm so far this month as the capital and the adjoining regions in northwest India had entered a “break monsoon” phase, the second this season, on Aug 10.
The IMD said that fairly widespread to widespread rainfall activity with isolated heavy falls is very likely to continue over the northeast and sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim during next five days, while isolated heavy to very heavy falls are very likely over Assam and Meghalaya on Monday.
Subdued rainfall is very likely over north Indian plains (Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan), adjoining central India, and most parts of peninsular India (outside Tamil Nadu and Kerala), including Maharashtra and Gujarat till August 15
