World Vegetarian Day which falls on October 1 every year was founded by the North American Vegetarian Society in the year 1977. The idea is ''to promote the joy, compassion and life-enhancing possibilities of vegetarianism." As meats and eggs have more cholesterol it is increasing the risk of heart diseases. Gradually vegetarianism has gained mileage with more number of people opting for vegetarian platter. There are abundant of health benefits of going vegetarian besides its assistance in weight loss and glowing skin.

Green leafy vegetables have low saturated fats and no cholesterol, hence vegetarians develop less cardiovascular problems. They are at less risk of heart attacks and strokes. Besides, potassium in vegetarian dishes helps in regulating blood pressure. Also a study of Oxford found that vegetarianism delays the onset of ageing. It strengthens the immunity as it is rich in fiber, antioxidants, vitamins and minerals. The study also said that there are chances of vegetarians outliving the non- vegetarians by six years. Include garlic, nut, berries in your daily diet to reduce the process of ageing. 

Also vegetables have less calories and are laden with fibre which help in keeping diabetes and obesity at bay. They are a complete pack of nutrients. If a meat-eater questions about the lack of protein in a vegetarian's diet, remember soy-based product tofu is a source of protein. Moreover pulses contain protein and are also great sources of  iron, magnesium, potassium, phosphorus, zinc,etc. Various studies have found association between vegetarianism and decreased risk of cancer. Plant-based diets is a healthy idea and can bring positive effects in your life. So, want to switch to vegetarianism ?
