International football player Poonam Chauhan has become the latest victim of dengue. The player, who hails from Varanasi, died of this mosquito-borne disease at a private hospital here on Tuesday night. She was 29.
The five times former captain of UP women football team, who had C level license for coaching but couldn’t become coach, was admitted to a private nursing home three days ago.
Munna Lal Chauhan, father of the deceased player, said that blood platelets count of Poonam continued to fall in last few days and it dropped to 13,000.
“Her platelets continued to decline… doctors tried to save her but my daughter passed away,” he said.
Chauhan, who was said to be unemployed from last few years, had in past represented India at the international forum as well.
Till last month, according to government statistics, over nine deaths and 3600 cases of dengue have been reported from across the state.
The latest death from Varanasi comes on a day the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court has rapped the Akhilesh Yadav government for poor work in controlling the menace of dengue, for not spending central funds and for faking statistics on the death toll in the vector borne disease.
