Five terrorists have been gunned down, while one CRPF jawan has been martyred and nine others injured so far in the militant attack at a police station in Srinagar’s Nowhatta area in Jammu and Kashmir.
The deceased jawan, identified as Pramod Kumar, was a Commanding Officer (CO) of 4th Battalion of the CRPF.
“Militants attacked a security forces injuring 10 security personnel, including nine Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) troopers and a local policeman,” a police officer said.
Two militants have been killed in the encounter but their bodies have not been retrieved yet, the official said.
The injured were transferred to a hospital, he said, adding that the doctors described the condition of two CRPF troopers as critical.
The gunmen were unable to take control of the police station in the old city of Srinagar, but did wound nearly 10 security personnel in the attack.
Three more militants are believed to be on the run and police have launched a manhunt.
The local authorities have imposed curfew in the entire Srinagar and all other nine districts in the Valley to prevent violence on the country's 70th Independence Day celebration.
