All speculations regarding Najeeb Jung’s replacement have been brought to rest as retired bureaucrat Anil Baijal is likely to take over his designation of Lieutenant Governor of New Delhi. President Pranab Mukherjee today approved his appointment as the Lt.Governor of the national capital.

Anil, who was Home Secretary in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government, was the frontrunner for the post which fell vacant after Jung’s abrupt resignation.

Baijal had been a member of the executive council of the Vivekananda International Foundation, a New Delhi-based think-tank that had many of its fellows appointed to senior positions in the Narendra Modi government.

The 1969 cadre IAS officer retired in 2006, when he was the Chief Secretary in the Urban Development Ministry.

Najeeb Jung, in an unexpected move, tendered his resignation as Delhi LG on December 22.

The government had speeded up the steps to finalise a name that will replace Jung at the top office in the capital.

Apart from Baijal, another name that did the rounds in media was of KJ Alphonse, a Kerala cadre officer. He is known for the demolition of illegal structures during his stint as the chief of Delhi Development Authority (DDA).
