Asian Games 2018: Prime Minister Narendra Modi hails performance of Wushu players

On a historic day for Indian sports history, four of the country's athletes today won an unprecedented four bronze medals in Wushu - a Chinese martial arts sport - even after they lost their respective semifinal matches.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi today hailed the performance of Indian Wushu players at the Asian Games underway in Jakarta, saying they are doing a wonderful job.

He said Surya Bhanu Pratap Singh's bronze medal in the 60-kg category is a matter of immense joy for every Indian.

In a series of tweets, he also appreciated the "phenomenal effort" by Narender Grewal. "Delighted that he has won the bronze in the Wushu 65 kg Sanda event. I am sure he will continue to make India proud in the times to come," Modi wrote.

He also appreciated the performance of Santosh Kumar and N Roshibina Devi, saying "our Wushu champions are doing wonderfully in Jakarta".

Kumar and Roshibina Devi won bronze in separate Wushu events.

Modi also commended the shooters for bringing "more glory home".

"India congratulates Rahi Sarnobat for the well-deserved gold in the 25m air pistol event at the @asiangames2018," he said.
