Stung by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati's assertion that the Bundelkhand package was "inadequate", Congress on Friday in Lucknow demanded a "white paper" on how she spent the huge funds received from the Centre.

"Instead of utilising the funds for the welfare of the state or the impoverished Bundelkhand region she has wasted it on setting up parks and installing statues", UPCC Spokesman Akhilesh Pratap Singh told reporters here.

Claiming that about fifty per cent of over Rs 1.60 lakh crore received from the Centre was part of the non-plan expenditure, Singh said had the Chief Minister been serious about the development of Bundelkhand she could have utilised the funds for the purpose.

"The annual revenue of the state today is Rs 5000 crore whereas the total amount spent on parks and memorials by the Chief Minister together account for Rs 8000 crore, he said, adding that instead of asking the Centre for more help she should first make the spendings public by bringing a white paper on how she utilised the Central funds.

He alleged that huge amounts received from the Centre were still lying unused in the absence of concrete schemes. PTI
