Lucknow, Dec 4: Firebrand Muslim leader Mohammad Azam Khan today formally rejoined Samajwadi Party and attended a meeting of the state office bearers here.

Azam went to SP Supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav's residence and later reached the party office with Yadav to attend the meeting called to discuss the party's strategy for the 2012 Assembly polls.

All the MPs, MLAs and executive members of district and state units were invited to attend the meeting.

Khan, party sources said, has been offered the post of Leader of Opposition in the state Assembly presently held by Mulayam's brother Shiv Pal Singh Yadav.

The party feels that Khan would brighten it's prospects in the 2012 polls as he has good say in the Muslim community.

At the meeting, Shivpal Singh Yadav announced his resignation from the post of Leader of Opposition in the state Assembly and offered the same to Azam Khan.

Azam was expelled from the SP after the 2009 Lok Sabha polls for his involvement in anti-party activities and opposing the candidature of Jaya Prada from Rampur.

Khan was also opposed to joining hands with former BJP leader Kalyan Singh during the polls due to which the SP's Muslim vote bank received a dent. PTI
