The move is being seen as a major breakthrough for women in armed forces.

The Indian Army, for the first time, stated its online registration of women for recruitment as soldiers into the military police.

The project, that was mooted by General Bipin Rawat soon after taking over as Army Chief, was given the final approval by the Defence Ministry recently.

Until now, women were allowed in select areas such as medical, legal, educational, signals and engineering wings of the Army.

Interested candidates can apply online on the official website of Indian Army. The application process will end on June 8, 2019.

To get shortlisted, the candidates will be required to qualify the Common Entrance Exam (CEE) followed by the Physical Endurance Test (PET), besides fulfilling the eligibility criterion.

The role of the military police includes policing cantonments and Army establishments, preventing breach of rules and regulations by soldiers, maintaining movement of soldiers as well as logistics during peace and war, handling prisoners of war and extending aid to civil police when required.
