Bangalore: Karnataka BJP's prominent minority face and former minister Mumtaz Ali Khan yesterday quit the party and joined the Congress here protesting against Narendra Modi being nominated as BJP's prime ministerial candidate.

He also resigned from the legislative council.

Khan told reporters at the Congress office that the Gujarat chief minister had not expressed regret for the 2002 incidents in his state.

A retired sociology professor, he was minister for minority affairs, Haj and Wakf in the ministry headed by B.S. Yeddyurappa, the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) first-ever in south India.
