Agra to face water crisis for 60 days

The Agra Water Works has announced a major cleaning programme of its water tanks and overhaul of machinery and equipment on Thursday, due to which the city will either go dry or get limited water supply for the next 60 days. According to an official, a major water plant had been shut, which will affect the old city and parts of Trans-Yamuna colonies.

The unit in Jeoni Mandi area is over a century old. The other unit, located in Sikandra area, will remain operational.

"The situation is only likely to worsen as storage tanks and the local plant have to be cleaned up before water from the Gangajal pipeline reaches next month," an official said.

The Taj city is expected to face a shortfall of 90 MLD (million litres per day), he said.

Half the city will face a water scarcity for around two months. Scores of colonies and mohallas will remain under pressure, he added.

"It is not possible for the municipal water works to meet the entire demand of the burgeoning city," Sudhir Gupta, a resident of Vijay Nagar Colony said.

The Agra Cantonment area has been facing major water shortage the past few days.

The residents will have to rely on thousands of hand pumps, submersible pumps and tube wells to meet the shortfall.
