New Delhi: India has more number of billionaires than France, Saudi Arabia, Switzerland and Hong Kong and is home to the sixth largest group of super rich population in the world, says a finding by wealth-X and UBS billionaire census report 2013.
In addition, the country's financial capital Mumbai with 30 billionaire, is among the top 5 'billionaire cities' globally, which was topped by New York that is home to 96 billionaires. Hong Kong, Moscow and London make the top five with 75, 74 and 67 billionaires respectively.
The report also throws up a significant finding that not all these Indian billionaires have college degrees. Three of every 10 billionaires in India don't even have a college degree, it says.
Overall, India has a strong contingent of 103 billionaires and is narrowly behind Russia's 108. But surprisingly India's billionaire population has decreased by 5.5% and the total billionaire wealth has fallen by $10 billion since last year.
In India, the most significant industries are not just finance, banking and investments where billionaires are created, instead, industrial conglomerates and pharmaceuticals are the first and second most significant industries for Indian billionaires.
The report further said that a majority of Indian billionaires are college-educated with 72 per cent possessing at least a bachelor's degree.
In terms wealth creation, the report showed that the Asian region resulted in most newly-minted billionaires since July 2012. Asia was followed by North America. At current growth rates, the census forcast that Asia will catch up with North America in five years.
The world over, Globally, there are 2,170 billionaires as of 2013, with a combined net worth of USD 6.5 trillion, more than the GDP of every country except the United States and China.
