The Air India aircraft was descending from 19,000 ft while the Nepal Airlines aircraft was flying at an altitude of 15,000 ft at the same location.
By the time the controller realised the situation, the Air Asia India flight had reached 38,008 ft while the IndiGo flight was flying at 38,000 ft.
Civil Aviation Minister Hardeep Singh Puri on Monday handed over the first licence issued by the aviation regulator DGCA to Air Traffic Control (ATC) personnel in the country. Till date, the licence to ATC personnel was being given by the Airports Authority of India (AAI) itself.
At present, breath analyser test for these personnel is carried out at Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Ahmedabad, Cochin, Lucknow and Guwahati airports.
According to Airports Authority of India Chairman Guruprasad Mohapatra, the migration procedures have already commenced from the old ATC to the new tower and the process is expected to be completed before August 15. At present, AAI which has been mandated to handle the air traffic management services at the airport is running a parallel operation to test the automation and other systems in the new facility.
It is essential for commercial pilots to maintain adequate contact with Air-Traffic Control (ATC). However, signals from Chennai ATC have been week for past few weeks and pilots are forced to fly over Bay of Bengal without any contact with the ATC.
