How a Blood Moon is formed?

For a Blood Moon to be formed, the Earth and the Moon should be positioned in a relation to the Sun leading to a lunar eclipse.

A lunar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes directly behind Earth and into its shadow which usually results in the Moon disappearing from the sky.

To create a blood moon, the Earth should not fully block the Sun and allow some light to reach the surface of the Moon, through Earth’s atmosphere.

This is known as the ‘Rayleigh scattering’ phenomenon when the rays of the Sun gets filtered because of Earth’s atmosphere.

Rayleigh scattering is the filtering of certain bands of colour by sunlight and those least affected become the colour of the light.

Thus, in Blood Moon, the red and orange colours in the spectrum are least effected giving the moon its red glow.
