Former Madhya Pradesh chief minister Arjun Singh was solely responsible for allowing Union Carbide chairman Warren Anderson to leave Bhopal after the gas leak incident in 1984, senior Congress leader Satyavrat Chaturvedi said on Tuesday .
"On December 8, 1984, Arjun Singh has himself accepted in a press conference that police had arrested and put in custody Warren Anderson by his order. And on 9th December when he was asked by a press reporter if he had talked to the Centre in this connection, he denied and said this matter was totally under his purview and no need to take permission from the Centre arose," he said.
"On December 14, 1984 Arjun Singh reached New Delhi and briefed Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi on how Anderson was arrested and released," the Congress spokesman said on a visit to Himalayan town of Munsiyari in this district.
Accusing the media of continuing to drag the name of Rajiv Gandhi in the case, Chaturvedi alleged that despite knowing all the recorded facts, the media on the instance of some "vested" political elements were deliberately trying to implicate Rajiv Gandhi in the case. "When everything has become clear after Pranab Mukherjee's statement, the media should try to know the real pointer in his statement," he said. PTI
