    Gurugram: 50 shanties gutted in fire

    Around 50 shanties were gutted in a massive fire at Badshahpur in sector 66 here on Wednesday, police said. Nobody was hurt in the incident, they said. More than eight fire engines were pressed into service that took over two hours to control the blaze, officials said.

    Youth associations urge PM, finance minister to increase taxes on tobacco products

    On the eve of National Youth Day, several youth associations on Wednesday appealed to the prime minister and the finance minister to increase taxes on all tobacco products in the upcoming Budget for 2023-24.
    According to the youth groups, increasing excise duty on all tobacco products can be a very effective policy measure to address the immediate need to raise revenue by the central government.
    It will be a winning proposition for generating revenue and reducing tobacco use and related diseases, they said.

     AIMIM president Asaduddin Owaisi on Wednesday attacked RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat over his remark that Muslims have nothing to fear in India, but they must abandon their “boisterous rhetoric of supremacy”, and asked who is he to give Muslims “permission” to live in India and how dare he put “conditions” on their citizenship. "Who is Mohan to give Muslims “permission” to live in India or follow our faith? We’re Indians because Allah willed it. How dare he put “conditions” on our citizenship? We’re not here to “adjust” our faith or please a bunch of alleged celibates in Nagpur," Owaisi tweeted.

    Man apprehended with over Rs 57 lakh cash in Kashmir

    Police on Wednesday apprehended a man in Kupwara district of Jammu and Kashmir after seizing more than Rs 57 lakh in cash from him.
    Syed Irfan Abdullah was held in the presence of a magistrate following the recovery of Rs 57.43 lakh in cash, which was concealed in a geyser, at Laribal in Kupwara, a police spokesperson said.

    SC to hear plea against Bihar govt's move to conduct caste survey on January 20

    The Supreme Court Wednesday agreed to hear on January 20 a plea against the Bihar government's decision to conduct a caste census in the state.
     A bench of Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and Justice P S Narasimha posted the matter for hearing after a lawyer appearing for petitioner mentioned the matter. "Let the case come up next Friday," the bench said.

    Storm-struck California scrambles to clean up ahead of rain

    Storm-ravaged California scrambled to clean up and repair widespread damage on Wednesday as the lashing rain eased in many areas, although the north could see thunderstorms and another powerful weather front was expected to hit the state Friday.

    At least 17 people have died in the storms battering the state. The figure is likely to rise, Gov. Gavin Newsom said Tuesday during a visit to the scenic town of Capitola on the Santa Cruz coast that was hard hit by high surf and flooding creek waters last week.

    Man, woman's body found in hotel in northwest Delhi's Bawana

    Bodies of two persons have been found at a hotel in northwest Delhi's Bawana area with police suspecting that the man killed the woman before ending his life by consuming sulphas tablets. According to police, the hotel owner informed police about the two bodies in one of the rooms.
     

    The woman had an injury on the neck while foam marks and a foul smell were noticed in the mouth of the man. There was also some vomit on the side of the man's body, Deputy Commissioner of Police (outer north) Devesh Kumar Mahla said.

    Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Wednesday announced an ex-gratia of Rs one crore for the family of Delhi Police assistant sub inspector Shambhu Dayal, who died after being stabbed by a snatcher in Mayapuri area. "Defending the people ASI Shambhu Dayal did not care for his own life. He martyred. We are proud of him. There is no price for his life still we will provide Rs one crore ex gratia to his family in his honour," Kejriwal tweeted.

    Uttar Pradesh: Teenage boy dies after being hit by train in Bhadohi

    A 17-year-old boy died after being hit by a train in front of his house near Suraiyava station on the Bhadohi-Janghai section of the Northern Railways, police said on Wednesday. "The deceased, identified as Satish Kumar Yadav of Badlipur village, was taking a walk alongside the railway track near his house when he was hit by the Varanasi-Lucknow passenger train on Tuesday," Suryava police station in-charge Inspector Rakesh Kumar Singh said.

    China halts visas for Japan, South Korea in COVID-19 spat

    Chinese embassies stopped issuing new visas for South Koreans and Japanese on Tuesday in apparent retaliation for COVID-19 measures recently imposed by those countries on travellers from China. It wasn't clear whether China would expand the visa suspensions to other countries that have imposed virus testing on passengers from China following its COVID-19 surge. The embassies in Tokyo and Seoul announced the suspensions in brief online notices.

    The United States accused Russian military contractors backed by the Kremlin on Tuesday of interfering in the internal affairs of African countries and "increasing the likelihood that violent extremism will grow" in the Sahel region which is facing increasing attacks and deteriorating security -- an allegation Russia denied. This cruise will go on an adventurous journey for 51 days and pass through Bangladesh for 15 days. Following this, it will go to Dibrugarh through the Brahmaputra river in Assam.
