Govind Singh Rajput is the present Madhya Pradesh Cabinet Minister for Revenue and Transport under Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan. Rajput is also considered a close aide of Union Cabinet Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia and chose to support Scindia during the Madhya Pradesh political crisis in 2020 when 22 Congress MLAs loyal to him resigned and joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Rajput is representing the Surkhi constituency in the Madhya Pradesh Assembly. He won the seat in 2003 for the first time after defeating BJP's Bhupendra Singh with a margin of 13,865 votes. In 1998, Bhupendra Singh defeated Rajput from the Surkhi seat. Rajput retained Surkhi in 2008 with a victory over BJP's Rajendra Singh Mokalpur. However, BJP's Parul Sahu Kesari ended Rajput's victory march in 2013 and defeated him with a margin of just 141 votes. Rajput made a comeback in 2018 and won the seat again by defeating BJP candidate Sudheer Yadav. In the 2020 bypoll, Govind Singh Rajput defeated Parul Sahu Kesari, who was the Congress candidate at that time, to avenge his 2013 loss. Rajput was also Minister for Revenue and Transport in the Kamal Nath Cabinet from 2018 to 2020. He also held a portfolio of Food and Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs under Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan for a brief period in 2020. Rajput is contesting from Surkhi against Congress candidate Neeraj Sharma in the Madhya Pradesh Assembly Election 2023.
