Taipei, Taiwan, March 11 : Taiwan, Phillippines and Russia authorities have issued a tsunami warning after a powerful quake struck off Japan on Friday.
Taiwan's central weather bureau on Friday warned people living on the island's east and northeast coasts to be on guard for tsunamis set off by a major quake off Japan.
Waves are expected to reach Hualien and Taitung on the island's east coast around 0930 GMT and the northeastern port of Keelung half an hour later, the bureau said.

"We urge residents in coastal areas to be on their guard and take precaution while we continue to monitor the development of tsunamis," it said in a statement.
The Philippines warned people living on its east coast to be on alert for the possibility of tsunamis after a major quake off Japan, the government's eismology agency said.
"There is no evacuation order but people living along the entire length of the country's east coast should be on alert and await further instructions," the agency's chief Renato Solidum said in a nationwide radio broadcast.
Russia's emergency ministry issued a tsunami warning for the Kuril Island chain after a powerful quake struck off Japan, officials said.
"A potential tsunami warning is declared for the Kuril chain that includes four islands claimed by Japan," a spokeswoman for regional emergencies ministry told AFP.
"People are being evacuated," spokeswoman Yekaterina Potvorova said. She added that the tsunami warning did not include the nearby Sakhalin Island.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre has put the territories of Guam, Taiwan, the Philippines, the Marshall Islands, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Nauru, Micronesia and Hawaii under a lower tsunami watch.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii widened its tsunami warning to include most of the Pacific Ocean region Friday.
The warning issued at 0730 GMT follows a massive earthquake that has struck off the northeastern coast of Japan. It includes russia, the Philippines, Papua New Guinea, Hawaii, Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific coast of South America but does not include North America.
Sirens were sounded shortly afterward in Honolulu alerting people in coastal areas to evacuate.
Tsunami warnings are issued due to the imminent threat of a tsunami.

The United States West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center issued a tsunami warning for the coastal areas of California and Oregon from Point Conception, California to the Oregon-Washington border.
