A Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) student was allegedly gang-raped by two Afghan nationals in south Delhi’s Green Park area last week.
According to police, both the accused were arrested a day after it was reported to the them. They have been identified as Twaab alias Salim Ahmed (27) and Sulaiman Ahmadi (31).
The 21-year-old victim, police said, had met one of the accused at a pub in Hauz Khas Village, who invited her to his Green Park residence where she was raped by two. The incident had taken place on January 12.
The survivor, an undergraduate student at JNU, had gone to a pub with a female friend where she met Salim. He knew the friend and had met the victim a few times earlier. Salim approached the two and had dinner after which he invited them to his place for an after-party. At the house, Salim introduced the women to three others, including Sulaiman.
The woman said that after the party, her friend returned to the university whereas she stayed back. When the woman woke up, she realised Sulaiman was trying to force himself on her.
The victim went back to her hostel in JNU and narrated the incident to her two friends, who immediately took her to the police station. She was taken to a nearby hospital for medical examination.
"They met the victim in a pub located at Hauz Khas Village and took her to a flat on the pretext of partying with some other friend. They later offered her a sedative-laced drink and committed the crime when she became unconscious," Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police Chinmoy Biswal said.
"After the victim complained to police about the sexual assault, Police arrested the accused persons, Twaab and Ahmadi. They were sent to judicial custody," Biswal added.
On the victim’s complaint, an FIR under section 376 (punishment for rape) read with 34 (Acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of the IPC was lodged at the Safdarjung Enclave police station on January 12.
They were living in Delhi on United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees card. Ahmed, an event manager, had been living in India since the last 10 years, while Ahmadi was living in India for the last two years.
