Madurai: As the exit poll results showed NDA victory, a 40-year-old Congress ward secretary in Tirunelveli committed suicide on Monday.

Congressmen claimed that he took the extreme step upset over exit polls indicating a defeat for Congress in the Lok Sabha polls but police said that there was no evidence to substantiate the claim.

Instead, police said that inquiries have revealed that he was under extreme depression as he ran short of money for the past several days which prompted him to commit suicide.

District Congress functionaries paid floral tributes to Arunachalam, 46th ward secretary in Tirunelveli on Tuesday. Arunchalam was also working in the district Congress office in Tirunelveli.

According to police, the initial information was that Arunchalam was found upset from Monday evening when the exit polls came.
