In a shocking case of medical negligence, a private doctor removed a wrong organ of a patient during surgery in Uttar Pradesh's Varanasi district. The accused doctor has been identified as Praveen Tiwari who runs a private nursing home in the city. He has been booked following the orders of a local court for serious negligence as he removed a woman’s uterus, instead of the gall bladder.

The doctor has been booked under IPC’s sections 336, 337, 338 (causing grievous hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) and 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace), among others. Chief Medical Officer Sandeep Chaudhary said that the matter will be investigated by a panel of doctors after the police ask for an inquiry.

What's the matter?

The incident dates back to 2020 when Usha Maurya, a resident of Bela village in Varanasi’s Cholapur block, had experienced severe pain in her abdominal region. According to reports, she approached an ASHA worker from her village when the pain became too frequent. Following this, the ASHA worker took her to the private nursing home run by Tiwari in Gola where Usha was diagnosed with stones in her gall bladder.

On May 28, 2020, she was operated for the removal of her gall bladder at the doctor’s clinic. However, in March this year, Usha once again experienced a familiar sharp pain in her abdomen. As per sources, she took a digestive tablet but the pain persisted. She was taken to another private nursing home, this time in Baniyapur.

A case filed against accused doctor

On a thorough examination, it was found that her gall bladder was intact with stones, but her uterus was found missing. Usha went back to Tiwari with the test reports and demanded an explanation, but he allegedly started threatening her. After making several rounds to police stations, she approached a local court, after which a case was lodged against the accused doctor. After filing her complaint, Cholapur station officer Rajesh Tripathi said that the matter was under investigation and action would be taken soon.

Doctors leave scissors inside body during surgery

Earlier in June this year, a family in Rajasthan's Jaipur accused Fortis Hospital of negligence during a heart surgery and claimed that the doctors left surgical scissors inside the body due to which the patient died.

"After the operation, the patient's health continued to deteriorate and he died after 12 days. When the family reached the crematorium to collect the bones post-cremation, they found surgical scissors," said family members.

However, when the family contacted the hospital, they denied all allegations and said they were lying. The family of the deceased has now lodged a complaint against the hospital at the Jawahar Circle police station.
