West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee arrived late by 30 minutes for Cyclone Yaas review meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. According to sources, Mamata was present at the Kalaikunda air base in West Midnapore, however, she kept the PM waiting. West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar, BJP MLA Suvendu Adhikari and other officials were present during the meeting.
PM Modi undertook an aerial survey of the parts of Odisha and West Bengal which have been impacted by the Cyclone Yaas. Odisha government demanded long term solutions to mitigate problems caused by the repeated cyclones and provision of disaster resilient power systems.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Friday met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Bengal’s Kalaikunda and submitted preliminary report on damages caused by Cyclone Yaas. However, West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar criticised Banerjee for skipping review meet with Modi.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi today visited cyclone-ravaged West Bengal and Odisha. He conducted an aerial survey to assess the damage caused by Cyclone Yaas, that has claimed four lives so far.
As many as 201 relief camps have been set up and 596 people are evacuated in the West Singhbhum district of Jharkhand as part of relief efforts.
Senior scientist of India Meteorological Department (IMD), RK Jenamani on May 27 informed that the impact of Cyclone Yaas will stay for another 36 hours at eastern coast areas.
Cyclone Yaas crossed the north Odisha coast about 20 km south of Balasore between 10.30 and 11 am, with 130-140 km per hour winds and 150 km per hour gusts. At 1.30 pm it was over north coastal Odisha, about 15 km southwest of Balasore.
Very severe cyclonic storm Yaas is now about 30km south-southeast of Balasore. The landfall process started around 9am. It will take around 2 hours to complete. Over 11.5 lakh people were evacuated from vulnerable places in West Bengal ahead of the cyclone.

The India Meteorological Department said ‘Very Severe Cyclonic Storm’ Yaas has made landfall close to north of Dhamra port and south of Balasore district in Odisha at 9 am on Wednesday. As the storm is relatively a large sized system, the landfall can take several hours to complete. Wind speeds ranging between 140 and 155 kms are being reported from the coastal districts.
Cyclone Yaas is nearing the country's east coast, days after deadly cyclone, Tauktae, hit its west coast.
Yaas will lead to storm surge on the coasts of Balasore, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara and Bhadrak in Odisha. It will also cause a storm surge of two to four metres along the coastline of East Midnapore and one to two metres in the South 24 Parganas district.
"The severe cyclonic storm Yaas over east-central Bay of Bengal moved north-northwestwards with a speed of about 9 kmph during past six hours and lay centred at 9 UTC of May 24 over east-central Bay of Bengal," IMD said in its bulletin. "It is very likely to move north-northwestwards, intensify further into a very severe cyclonic storm during next 12 hours. It would continue to move north-northwestwards, intensify further and reach northwest Bay of Bengal near North Odisha and West Bengal coasts by May 26 early morning," the weather agency said.
PM Modi to hold meeting with ministers, officials today to review the preparations for the approaching Cyclone Yaas.
