Tokyo, July 31: A 6.4-magnitude earthquake has shaken northeastern Japan, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. But there is no tsunami warning in effect, Japanese broadcaster NHK said.

The quake struck around 3:53 a.m. local time Sunday about 100 kilometres southeast of the tsunami-ravaged Fukushima region, the USGS said on its website.

Witnesses reported feeling the tremor in the capital Tokyo, but there were no immediate reports of injuries.

A record 9.0-magnitude earthquake  caused severe destruction and spawned a deadly tsunami in the same region on March 11. Roughly 23,000 people were killed or went missing following both disasters, which also caused a radiation threat at the damaged Fukushima power plant.

NHK reported the power plant's operators as saying there were no abnormalities after Sunday's quake
