Karnataka Budget: Temples, mutts, cows in focus ahead of assembly election; Congress' flower-protest

Karnataka Budget 2023: CM BS Bommai made several announcements which may have elements that will please Bharatiya Janta Party's traditional voters as the state will go to poll in a few months.

Karnataka Budget 2023: With Assembly elections in Karnataka round the corner, Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai presented his government's last budget on Friday, in which he tried to target BJP's traditional voters.

CM Bommai announced construciton of Ram Mandir in Ramanagara.

Rs 1,000-crore for temples, mutts 

CM Bommai allocated Rs 1,000-crore for temples, mutts in election year. Rs 425 crore was allocated for the renovation of temples and mutts by the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments department. In the next 2 years, comprehensive development and renovation of temples and mutts to be undertaken by the state government with an expenditure of Rs 1,000 crore, he announced.

Focus on cows in the budget

The CM announced various measures have been taken including enforcement of the Prohibition of Cow Slaughter Act, establishment of cow sheds, implementation of Punyakoti Adoption Scheme and opening of 290 mobile veterinary clinics for the protection of cow wealth.

A project called Jalanidhi will be started to raise the ground water level by constructing water ponds in farmers' lands and water conservation works. Construction of reservoirs will be encouraged in coordination with Narega scheme, he said.

AIIMS in Raichur
The cM announced a hospital on the lines of AIIMS in Raichur. A super speciality hospital will be built in Kumta, Uttara Kannada district.

Stating that this would be a "pro-people" budget, Bommai had repeatedly in recent days stated that it will focus on programmes that would give more support to poor, weaker sections, farmers, working classes, women and youth, among others.

Congress' flower-protest

Former cm Siddaramaiah and other Congress leaders were seen sporting flowers in their ears at the assembly marking of protest against the government. They accused BJP government of cheating people by not fulfilling promises from the previous budget and the 2018 manifesto.
