Washington: Amid tensions over the carnage in Dallas last week that left five police officers dead, the White House has announced that US President Barack Obama will visit the Texas city on Tuesday.

President Obama will address an interfaith service in memory of five police officers shot dead in a sniper attack during a protest decrying police shootings of black men.

"At the invitation of Dallas Mayor, Obama will deliver remarks at an interfaith memorial service with the families of the fallen police officers and members of the Dallas community whose unity is reflective of who we are as Americans," the White House has said yesterday.

Obama will also meet privately with the families of the five slain police officers and those wounded to express the nation's support and gratitude for their service and sacrifice, it said.

Along with President Obama, the  memorial service would also be attended by Vice President Joe Biden and former President George W Bush and his wife Laura.

Bush will deliver brief remarks, the White House said.

Obama earlier condemned the sniper-style shootings of Dallas police officers, calling the assault a "vicious, calculated and despicable attack on law enforcement.
