New Delhi: Actor Shahid Kapoor’s upcoming ‘Udta Punjab’ has raised many eyebrows, ever since the trailer of the film rolled out. It has been at the centre of many controversies, the rumoured ban and the difference of opinion with the censor board.

The stars of the movie, has chosen to stay quiet on the brewing controversies but not on screen Tommy Singh. Shahid, who essays the role of an addict feels that in this movie he has delivered his career best performance.

While speaking to a leading entertainment magazine, Shahid explained that the movie is being wrongly labelled as one which is about drug abuse. He said,

“I’m using the word ‘substance’ and not ‘drugs’ because there’s a difference. What’s a drug and what is not a drug is up for discussion. But when you say substance abuse it talks about being dependent on an external consumable product.”

The neo-noir drama helmed by Abhishek Choubey, is about the current situation in the state of Punjab. The film features Alia Bhatt as a Bihari immigrant, Kareena Kapoor Khan as a doctor and Diljit Dosanjh as a cop.

Speaking about the film, Shahid said

“It’s about four characters and their struggle with themselves and their journey in life. These four people could exist anywhere in the world not just Punjab. For Haider, Kashmir was the backdrop. Similarly, for Udta Punjab, Punjab is the backdrop. But the emotions that these four characters go through are universal as they indulge in substance abuse.”

The movie hit the right chord of cine buffs after the trailer’s release, so much so that when it was rumoured that it might face a ban, netizens took to social media to slam the censor board. So far, the movie is scheduled to release on June 17.
