Srinagar: Two people were arrested Thursday for throwing acid on a 21-year-old woman law student in this Jammu and Kashmir summer capital, police said.

A Special Investigation Team headed by Hazratbal Superintendent of Police Rayees M. Bhat set up nine units to track down the assailants involved in the Dec 11 attack in Nowshera area.

Irshad Ahmad Wani alias Sunny, son of Mohammad Amin and a resident of Wazir Bagh area, was apprehended for stalking the woman, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kashmir zone Abdul Ghani Mir told the media.

His interrogation led to the arrest of Mohammad Omar Noor, the son of Noor Mohammad and a resident of Bemina.

Police said Sunny was the "mastermind" in planning the crime.

He was stalking the woman for quite some time and was following her movements closely.

The IGP said Sunny's advances were spurned, and he roped in his friend and business partner Omar to attack the woman.

He said they were friends and had a shop of spare parts.

Sunny obtained 40 litres of distilled water and two litres of sulphuric acid from a shop in Batamaloo Dec 4.

The two carefully planned every step, and studied the spot at least seven times to plan the attack down to the minutest detail, the IGP said.

Omar borrowed his uncle's vehicle, attacked the woman around 9.30 a.m. and returned home.

His right hand was burnt when he threw the acid and tried to make a quick getaway.

The woman, who was earlier admitted to the Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences in Soura, is presently being treated in a super specialty hospital outside the state.
