Ulhasnagar (Maharashtra): Fortyeight-year-old police inspector Mahendra Chavan's monthly salary is Rs 51,000 but he has assets worth Rs 40 crore in the form of Rs 16 lakhs in bank deposits,  has two cars and owns nearly 19,000 sq metre plots in Kalyan, Titwala and Ulhasnagar.

Anti-Corruption Bureau, Thane inspector Vaidya says, Chavan  bought these properties with ill-gotten money.

There are at least eight women who have complained to police that he sexually abused them, when they went to lodge cases at his police station.  Cases under section 354 (sexual assault) and 509 (outraging modesty of women) will be filed against him.

Chavan was arrested by anti-corruption bureau on Feb 10 while accepting a bribe of Rs 10,000.

Local Maharashtra Navnirman Sena leader Yogiraj Deshmukh exposed Chavan, when the police officer called him to the police station and asked him to stop acting against a local builder.  Chavan threatened him saying he would file a case of extortion against him and extern him from the area.

Chavan then demanded Rs 15,000 from Deshmukh, after which the MNS leader went to the ACB office and filed a complaint. A trap was laid and when Deshmukh gave Rs 15,000 cash to Chavan, the police officer was nabbed.
