Gurdaspur, Punjab Aug 25:  Ranjit Singh, an army jawan, and his family members are absconding after they allegedly poisoned Ranjit's wife to death for giving birth to a girl child, police said.

Ranjit Singh  married Ranjit Kaur one and a half years back. Everything was going smooth until Kaur gave birth to a female child.

The family of the army jawan  wanted a boy and they began harassing  Ranjit Kaur. The family demanded a new car as dowry, which the bride's family could not fulfil, says Ranjit Kaur's brother Gurmeet Singh.

On  Friday, the jawan's family rang up her family to say that she was not well.  When the family members rushed to the spot, they found  Ranjit Kaur lying dead by the roadside, with both her feet tied, says Gurmeet Singh.

The entire family of Ranjit Singh had fled leaving the newborn girl child alone.

Police is now on the lookout of the family members. A case of murder and dowry harassment has been registered.
