The last ten days of September are expected to provide good showers in Chennai and the districts surrounding it, including Kancheepuram and Chengalpattu, according to the IMD officials.
The most recent prediction by the weather department indicated further downpour in Delhi and adjoining areas.
Two major spells of weak monsoon prevailed over the country -- from August 9-16 and August 23-27 -- when northwest, central, and adjoining peninsular and west coast of India had subdued rainfall activities.
Parts of Delhi received spells of rain in the early hours of Friday.
The weatherman issued a 'yellow' warning (be updated) for 14 districts in south and coastal Odisha and warned fishermen against venturing into the sea on Wednesday.
The India Meteorological Department on Sunday issued a warning for Maharashtra forecasting heavy to very heavy torrential rains with thunderstorms in the state till September 9.
India received 24 pc less rainfall than normal in Aug, but rainfall is expected to be above normal in Sept, the IMD said in its forecast for the month.
So far this year, Gujarat has recorded deficient rainfall of 50 percent, with the state receiving 288.6 millimetres of rain as against normal rainfall of 576.5 mm for the period, the IMD said.
On Sunday, Noida, Greater Noida and Ghaziabad received light to moderate rainfall, a much needed respite from the warm weather and high humidity.
The shortfalls in two successive months in the four-month Southwest Monsoon season from June 1 to September 30 have triggered fear of a below normal monsoon this year.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall in nine districts of the state.
Enhanced rainfall activity is very likely over south peninsular India till August 30. It is likely to reduce thereafter, the IMD added.
The IMD said the entire monsoon trough lies close to the foothills of the Himalayas. It is likely to remain there till August 26.
Thunderstorms, accompanied with lightning, are likely over east India during the next three days, the IMD has said.
IMD on Monday predicted light to moderate intensity rain accompanied by thunderstorms for Delhi and Uttar Pradesh.
There will be a gradual increase in rainfall activity over northwest India and Bihar with fairly widespread to widespread rainfall, with isolated heavy falls, very likely over Bihar, east Uttar Pradesh, and Uttarakhand till August 23, it said in a release.
It also predicted moderate rain in Mumbai with the possibility of occasional intense spells in isolated places in the next 24 hours.
The current spell of widespread rainfall activity with isolated heavy to very heavy falls is very likely to continue over Northeast India and sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim till August 14 and reduction thereafter, according to the IMD.
Subdued rainfall is very likely over north Indian plains (Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan), adjoining central India, and most parts of peninsular India (outside Tamil Nadu and Kerala), including Maharashtra and Gujarat till August 15
