First image of supermassive black hole at centre of Milky Way galaxy revealed
May 12, 2022 20:37 ISTScientists had previously seen stars orbiting around something invisible, compact, and very massive at the centre of the Milky Way.
Scientists had previously seen stars orbiting around something invisible, compact, and very massive at the centre of the Milky Way.
The team at Stanford University noticed an intriguing pattern while watching X-rays flung out into the universe by the supermassive black hole at the center of a galaxy 800 million light-years away.
Called Palomar 5, the globular cluster was discovered in 1950. It is in the Serpens constellation at a distance of about 80,000 light years, and it is one of the roughly 150 globular clusters that orbit around the Milky Way.
Talk about a heavy snack. For the first time, astronomers have witnessed a black hole swallowing a neutron star, the most dense object in the universe — all in a split-second gulp.
The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) recently shared images of two supermassive black holes in Galaxy NGC 6240 which are in the process of merging.
Earth is inching closer to a supermassive black hole in the Milky Way galaxy at 7 km per second, a study has found out. According to a map issued by Japanese radio astronomy project VERA, earth in the past 35 years has travelled some 1,900 light years and is now sitting at a distance of 25,800 light years from the black hole.
Researchers have discovered a galaxy that has been managing to survive a black hole's hunger by continuing to birth new stars, about 100 Sun-sized stars a year.
Star seen getting sucked by a massive black hole as shown by European Southern Observatory (ESO) through artistic animation.
The most massive black hole collision ever detected has been directly observed by the LIGO and VIRGO Scientific Collaboration, which includes scientists from The Australian National University (ANU).
Scientists have found an unusual, mysterious gamma-ray "heartbeat" that appears to be in sync with a neighboring black hole. The cloud "beats" in rhythm with a miniature black hole located roughly 100 light-years away, suggesting the objects are connected in some way.
Experts from Harvard College in partnership with the Black Hole initiative have raised the possibility that the orbital evidence for Planet 9 could be the result of a missing link in the decades-long puzzle of dark matter.
The supermassive black hole, J2157, will soon become the largest black hole in the universe--Abell 85--which has a mass of 40 billion suns. The black hole is 1.2 billion light-years away from Earth and 8,000 times bigger than the black hole Sagittarius A*, which is at the centre of the Milky way.
A spectacular discovery of light flares produced by a collision between 2 black holes has been made by scientists of US universities. The discovery is groundbreaking because black holes are regions of spacetime where the gravitational force is so strong that not even light can escape, this means that if two black holes collide they should not emit light.
For the first time, astronomers have found quasi-periodic flickers in milimeter-waves from the center of the Milky way galaxy, Sagittatrius (Sgr) A*. The team found this astonishing revelation using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA)
Hubble Space Telescope revealed the strongesr evidence for mid-sized black holes in the universe. Hubble has also confirmed that this "intermediate-mass" black hole dwells inside a dense star.
The first hint of this giant explosion actually came in 2016. Chandra images of the Ophiuchus galaxy cluster revealed an unusual curved edge, but scientists ruled out an eruption given the amount of energy that would have been needed to carve out such a large cavity in the gas.
A scientist and an author, Stephen Hawking achieved various milestones in the field of scientific research and unearthed theories regarding black holes in the universe and other discoveries. A look at famous books he authored & selected academic work for science enthusiats.
Cutting edge innovations in research and technology celebrated science and forwarded humankind's understanding of complex realities of the universe. The year will also be remembered as the year of testing biological and ethical limits in the laboratory, helping researchers find new avenues in the treatment of critical diseases.
Until just a few years ago, stellar black holes could only be discovered when they gobbled up gas from a companion star, the researchers said. This process creates powerful X-ray emissions, detectable from the Earth, that reveal the presence of the collapsed object, they said.
The black hole system studied is named MAXI J1820+070 and was first discovered in early 2018. About 10,000 light years away in our own Milky Way, it has the mass of about seven suns.
