The Lahore High Court today adjourned the hearing on a petition seeking the release of Jamat-ud-Dawa (JuD) chief Hafiz Saeed and his four aides, who are under house arrest since January 31st this year.

According to a report in The Express Tribune, the Punjab government told the court that detention orders were issued on the instructions of the federal government and a federal review board report on the extension of the detention was submitted before the court.

However, the petitioner’s counsel AK Dogar pointed out that the review board declined the government’s request for an extension.

After hearing both the sides, the High Court adjourned the matter till June 19.

The Punjab government placed Hafiz Saeed and four other JuD party leaders under house arrest on January 31st.

The interior ministry’s letter had stated that “as per UN Security Council sanctions, two organisations, JuD and Falah-e-Insaniat Foundation (FIF), had been put on a watch list and were placed under the Second Schedule of the Anti-Terrorism Act.”

On January 27, the interior ministry had told the Punjab government that JuD and FIF were engaged in activities which could be detrimental to peace and security, adding they were in violation of Pakistan’s obligations to the UN Security Council Resolution 1267.
