A Facebook user shared a photograph of Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud with a message, suspected to be a statement from him, encouraging individuals to go out in the city and protest against the government. In its examination, the India TV Fact Check team observed that a fabricated statement was shared via social media in the name of the CJI.

How much truth is there in this claim? We will know in today's investigation as well as whether he has ever said anything like this.

Claim

A Facebook user shared on August 10 a photograph of CJI DY Chandrachud with a message that cited him encouraging individuals to challenge the government in the city, adding that he was standing in their support.

“We are trying our best to save the Constitution of India and the democracy of India. But your cooperation is also very important for this; all the people should unite and come out on the streets and ask the government for their rights. This dictatorial government will scare people and threaten them, but you don't have to be afraid. Keep courage and ask the government to account; I am with you,” read an English translation of the Hindi text in the photo.

Investigation

Beginning the examination, the India TV Fact Check team conducted a Google Reverse Image Search on the photograph going viral on social media. Our search result led us to a Facebook post by boxer-politician Vijender Singh, who shared the same picture.

The India TV Fact Check team then searched with a specific set of keywords, which prompted an X post by Live Law, shared on August 14, which conveyed an explanation given by the Public Relations Office (PRO) of the Supreme Court, invalidating the viral case as "fake, ill-intended, and mischievous”.

Overall, this claim is completely fake. The CJI has not made any such statement. Hence, it has also been found wrong by the Fact Check team of India TV. That's why we should avoid sharing it. We will always keep showing you the right news.
