Gohana (Haryana): Mahipal, the man from whose vacant house 150-ft tunnel was dug for carrying out the daring burglary at the local Punjab National Bank branch, has committed suicide by consuming poison, police said.

Mahipal was the owner of the building from where the tunnel was dug. He was detained by local police for interrogation on Wednesday night.

Neither Mahipal, nor any tenant was staying in the vacant building from where the burglars had dug a tunnel to the PNB branch.

Mahipal's body was found inside a car on Panipat road Thursday morning.

Haryana police has announced  a Rs 10 lakh reward for credible clues leading to the arrest of burglars, who decamped with jewellery and valuables worth crores  from nearly 88  bank lockers during the weekend holidays.

SSP Arun Nehra has asked people to give clues to Police Control Room phone number 0130-2222903, DSP Gohana 08053882304 and DSP HQ Sonepat 08053882122.

A senior official from the Prime Minister's Office visited Gohana recently to get the latest status about the investigation.

The burglary was noticed when the PNB branch was opened by staff on Monday.

Devendra Malik, branch manager of the bank, said the bank was not responsible for the valuables kept inside the lockers by customers, because the bank does not keep records of the valuables. There were 360 lockers inside the bank, out of which 88 were burgled.

The tunnel was dug from a dilapidated building in the neighbourhood, which led straight to the locker room.

A Special Investigation Team headed by Vivek Sharma, IG, Gurgaon range has been formed.
