In a major development in gang-rape and murder of an eight-year-old nomadic girl in Jammu and Kashmir's Kathua, the Supreme Court on Friday stayed the proceedings before the Juvenile Justice Board (JJB) against a "minor" allegedly involved in the case.
BSP chief Mayawati Tuesday said the conviction in the horrific Kathua gangrape-murder case will serve as a deterrent and prevent people from committing such heinous crimes.
The judgment in the rape and murder of an eight-year-old in Kathua in Jammu and Kashmir is likely to be delivered on June 10, nearly a year after the trial began in a court in Pathankot, special public prosecutor J K Chopra said on Monday.
The witness had alleged custodial torture by the state police in the case lodged against him by his sister-in-law.
The Crime Branch has also asked the district police to provide protection to the two witnesses who made written complaints. They said they were being harassed and threatened by the friends and relatives of the accused and were under pressure to change their statements before the district and sessions court in Pathankot, Punjab, which is hearing the case.
Sanji Ram and Vishal Jangotra , the two accused, also opposed a plea seeking transfer of trial to Chandigarh.
