PM WANI Wi-Fi Scheme: The Internet has become an important part of our everyday life- from shopping, working for corporate, banking and more. Today, we do everything which is linked to the internet- from location tracking, SOS help, photography, national and international calls via the internet and more. Due to affordable broadband and internet data service provided by telecom companies, internet access has reached almost every corner of the country and many parts of the world where the telecom service is not reachable. But, unfortunately, there are still many people who cannot afford the internet data plans which are offered by the telecom companies of India.

For those who cannot afford the existing internet recharge plans offered by the leading telecom service providers, PM Modi launched PM WANI (Prime Minister Wi-Fi Access Network Interface) in December 2020. Through this scheme, internet facilities will be provided to the people at very economical price tags.

Here is everything you need to know about the new service:

PM WANI offering 2 lakh hotspots ready:

PM Modi had announced the Digital India Mission under which, the Department of Telecommunications and C-DOT have come together and have created around 2 lakh (1,99,896+) public Wi-Fi hotspots across the country.

Through these public Wi-Fi hotspots, those who cannot afford internet recharge plans (offered by telecoms) will be able to access the internet at any time, anywhere across India.

Under the PM WANI scheme, PDO i.e. Public Data Office is already available in public places like railway stations, banks, post offices, grocery shops, schools, libraries etc. Through the Wi-Fi here, you will be able to use the internet on your smartphone. For this, you will not need a SIM card.

How to use the internet via PM WANI?

  1. To use the internet through PM-WANI, you will have to install the Data PM-WANI app on your smartphone (do note, that people using a feature phone will not be able to access it).
  2. With the PM WANI app, you will be able to connect to the public Wi-Fi POD office near you
  3. You will have to recharge to use data in the app, offering plans which are ranging from Rs 6 to Rs 99.
