Mumbai, Mar 30: You may have often seen ads in both the print and visual media about "rudraksha mala" manufacturers and dealers promising fortune if one wears the rudraksha beads, considered the "tears of Lord Shiva".
A Mumbai-based man Bhanudas Dhotre, bought a Rudraksha mala and a Shubha Dhanalaxmi Yantra from a Mumbai dealer Shri Ram Agency for Rs 5,630 on December 21, 2010.
He was in search of a good job as he was unemployed. Dhotre was taken by ads on TV channels marketing Rudraksha mala and yantra, and he bought them, but no job materialized.
The TV commercials had offered a full refund if the buyer's aspiration was not fulfilled within a fortnight.
So, Dhotre went to the Mumbai suburban district consumer disputes redressal forum, which heard his case and directed the dealer and manufacturer of the products to pay him Rs 25,000 as compensation.
The consumer forum said, several institutions and astrologers are raking in profits by misleading gullible people through ads. It directed that a copy of the order be sent to the MRTPC (Monopolies & Restrictive Trade Practices Commission) to prevent such fraudulent business.
