Patna boy who fell into sewer could not be traced even after 80 hours

It's been more than 80 hours since the operation for rescuing 10-year-old Deepak, who fell into a sewer in Bihar’s Patna, was launched. Teams of NDRF and SDRF personnel have been working continuously to locate the child, but to no vain. According to reports, the sewer has not been cleaned for last 35 years, due to which tracing the child has become challenging. The pipes of the sewer are reported to be chocked.

In what highlights the sorry state of affairs, neither the municipal corporation nor any other agency have any idea about the layout of the sewage line. The sewage was constructed in 1969 and locals say it has not been cleaned even once since then.

The rescue teams prepared Deepak’s mannequin to ascertain his whereabouts after he fell into the sewer. They tried to reach the child by following the dummy in the flow of the sewer. The kid however, could not be traced.

The kid fell through a manhole in Shri Krishna Puri locality in the capital city at around 1.30 pm on Saturday while returning home after delivering lunch to his father Guddu Ram, who is a fruit vendor.

A nearby sump house was shut off within minutes of his fall.

The rescue teams were carrying out their operations from two ends and so far about 80 per cent of the total length of the sewer and the operation was being hampered by "highly muddy water and silt," an NDRF official said.

Local residents have been camping at the spot in large numbers and alleged that the manhole had been "lying uncovered for months".
