Cauvery water row: Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah calls all-party meet, files petition in SC

The meeting was held after the Cauvery Water Regulation Committee (CWRC) recommended that Karnataka release 5,000 cusecs of water to Tamil Nadu for the next 15 days.

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah called an all-party meeting to discuss the Cauvery water dispute with Tamil Nadu. Siddaramaiah has also filed a petition in the Supreme Court, seeking a stay on the CWRC's order. He has argued that Karnataka is facing a severe water crisis and is unable to release any more water to Tamil Nadu.

"We had called an all-party meeting to tell all parties about the situation. We have filed a petition in the Supreme Court," said Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah as quoted by news agency ANI.

Earlier, Tamil Nadu BJP President K Annamalai said, "Karnataka has to follow the law of the land. The law of the land is very clear. After 2018, the Cauvery Water Management Body was constituted and it has given its verdict."

"If there is a problem, they have to go and appeal to the Supreme Court. I am sure the Supreme Court will look in detail into Tamil Nadu's argument...Tamil Nadu doesn't want extra water, it wants its share of water," he said.

Cauvery water dispute

The Cauvery water dispute is a long-standing one between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. The two states share the Cauvery River, and both have competing claims on the water. The dispute has often led to tensions and even violence between the two states.

It is unclear what the next steps will be in the Cauvery water dispute. The Supreme Court is likely to hear Siddaramaiah's petition soon. It is also possible that the two states will reach a negotiated settlement.
