The bypoll has been dubbed as a report card of the 17-month-old AIADMK government, which itself underwent a tumultuous phase dominated by a rebellion and patch-up involving AIADMK coordinator O Panneerselvam.
The outcome of the by-election could serve as a report card of the ruling AIADMK which faced turbulence after late chief minister J Jayalalithaa’s death.
The election is also seen as a litmus test for the ruling party which is facing a barrage of opposition accusations including alleged corruption.
The AIADMK supremo spent 75 days in the Apollo hospital before breathing her last on December 5 last year.
Besides Dhinakaran, Sukesh Chandrashekhar, alleged middleman, Mallikarjuna, a long-time friend of Dhinakaran, and six others have been named as accused.
Jayalalithaa breathed her last on December 5, 2016 at the Apollo Hospital after being admitted for 75 days following prolonged illness.
