Garvit, Snehadevi win junior national tennis titles

New Delhi, Oct 20 :  In an all-Delhi final, Garvit Batra played out a gritty match against Shashank Nautiyal to emerge the boys under-16 singles winner at the Fenesta Open National Tennis Championships concluding here

New Delhi, Oct 20 :  In an all-Delhi final, Garvit Batra played out a gritty match against Shashank Nautiyal to emerge the boys under-16 singles winner at the Fenesta Open National Tennis Championships concluding here Saturday.




Top seed S. Snehadevi Reddy of Tamil Nadu took the girls under-16 singles title defeating Pranjalla Yadlapalli of Andhra Pradesh at the Delhi Lawn Tennis Association Complex.

Garvit and Shashank made their way into the final on the back of some huge upsets and fought a close final match that lasted three hours and 25 minutes. Eventually, it was Garvit who edged past Shashank to take the winner's trophy after a 7-5, 4-6, 6-2 win.

Both players fought hard where long rallies dominated the play, testing each other's physical and mental toughness.

Garvit was broken in the very first game of the match before he came back to win four straight games.

Shashank then got his act together and won four straight games in return to balance out Garvit's lead.

However, Garvit upped the ante and broke Shashank in the 10th and won the 12th game to seal the first set.

Shashank won the second set to take the match into the decider but his tiring legs did not let him give his 100 per cent and he needed medical attention on more than one occasion.

After 2-all, Shashank could not match Garvit's pace and went on to cede the title in the next four games.

In the girls final, Snehadevi justified her top billing by winning 2-6, 6-4, 6-1 but not before she was made to work hard for the title by second seed Pranjalla.
Snehadevi came back from a set down to claw into he match and seal the title.

Top seed B.R. Nikshep of Karnataka won the boys under-14 singles title with a comfortable 6-1, 6-0 win over Sanil Jagtiani of West Bengal while in the girls under-14 singles final, Delhi girl Vanshika Sawhney got the better of Maharashtra's Mihika Yadav 6-4, 7-6(4).

Final singles results:

Boys under-16: Garvit Batra bt Shashank Nautiyal 7-5, 4-6, 6-2.

Girls under-16: S. Snehadevi Reddy bt Pranjalla Yadlapalli 2-6, 6-4, 6-1.

Boys under-14: B.R. Nikshep bt Sanil Jagtiani 6-1, 6-0.

Girls under-14: Vanshika Sawhney bt Mihika Yadav 6-4, 7-6(4).
