Berhampur (Odisha): As a preventive measure on possible outbreak of jaundice, the Ganjam district administration in Odisha today put temporary restriction on the sale of ‘gup chup' (pani puri).

The district administration asked the Berhampur Municipal Corporation (BMC) authorities to take steps to check the sale of ‘gup-chup' in the town.

The action was taken by the district administration after spread of jaundice in Cuttack and Sambalpur cities. A meeting was held here to review measures taken to prevent the water-borne disease in Berhampur.

“Jaundice spreads through contaminated water. The water used for the preparation of street foods like gup-chup is likely contaminated and there is a need to check these foods,”

District Collector P C Chaudhary said.

“We will hold a meeting to make a roadmap to check selling of gup-chup and some other street foods in the town as precautionary measures,” said S K Das, the health officer in the BMC.

The civic authorities would also create awareness on the harm of consuming street food and asked the residents to use boiled water for drinking purpose.
