In a big setback to Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee, Dipen Kumar Pathak, the president of Assam unit of the TMC, resigned from the party over differences with her on the NRC issue.

Pathak said that whatever Mamata Banerjee has said on the NRC issue was not correct.

“What Mamata Banerjee said about NRC, that it has been brought in Assam to drive out Bengalis, I don't agree with that. It might create disturbance here & the blame would be on me as a president, so I've resigned from the post...Mamata Banerjee is not aware of the ground reality in Assam,” Pathak said.

Earlier in the day, two other leaders of Assam TMC- Diganta Saikia and Pradeep Pachoni -also resigned from the party saying they were disappointed over Mamata Banerjee's 'civil war' and 'bloodbath' remarks on the final draft of National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam.

All these three leaders alleged that Mamata Banerjee was making statements without being aware of the ground reality in the state.
