Mamata Banerjee

Often called as 'Didi', Mamata Banerjee has been serving as the chief minister of West Bengal since 2011. She is the first woman to hold the office and has also served as the railway minister of India, minister of coal and minister of state for human resource development.   1. Mamata Banerjee is often touted as the one single most important force of the East
  2. Mamata was the first politician to criticise demonetisation. She also refused to implement PM Modi's ambitious new health scheme in her state.
  3. Before entering politics, she worked as a stenographer, a private tutor, a primary school teacher and as a salesgirl.
  4. Mamata, whose father was an active Congress party supporter, joined the student wing of the party in college.
  5. She has done her graduation in History, and has a Master's degree in Islamic History and other degrees in Education and Law.
  6. Mamata is known for her white, woven Dhaniakhali saris and rubber slippers.
  7. She still lives in her childhood home with her extended family.
  8. She is an insomniac who loves Rabindra sangeet.
  9. Mamata had infamously termed the 2012 Park Street rape case as "Shajano ghotona" (a fabricated case) when the investigation had just begun.
  10. She has designed the logo of West Bengal government. 
  11. Mamata challenged the federal system of India when she ordered the arrest of CBI officials, who arrived in Kolkata to investigate the Saradha Group financial scandal.
  12. Mamata has been spearheading an offensive against the ruling BJP -- with the leaders of over 20 Opposition parties. She also organised a mega Opposition rally in January at Kolkata parade ground.
