Nashik: An ailing patient in Pune received the gift of life after doctors successfully transplanted a liver from a 69-year-old brain-dead patient from Nashik, thanks to a green corridor.

According to a report, the liver of 69-year-old Subhash Bhanushal, the brain-dead patient was harvested and transported from Nashik to Pune via the green corridor.

With coordinated efforts of doctors, traffic police, and medical staff, the distance of six hours was covered in nearly half the time (3.6 hours). All traffic signals along the highway were shut for easy passage of the convoy.

"It took 22 minutes for the ambulance escorted by police vehicle to travel from Rishikesh hospital at Gangapur road to Chincholi phata, while it required another 58 minutes to travel from Chincholi phata to Sangamner," Shrikant Dhivare, deputy commissioner of police (zone II),Pune , told TOI.

The patient, Bhanushali, was admitted to Rishikesh hospital in Nashik after he suffered a stroke on Sunday night. And, seeing no response to any medical treatment and after necessary investigations, he was declared brain-dead on Monday, said Bhausahab Morey, director of the hospital.

After his family agreed to donate his organs, the medical team harvested his liver, kidneys, eyes and skin for transplant. While his kidneys were given to two patients, the eyes and skin were stored in respective banks.

"The operation to harvest the organs began at 11.30am on Monday. Each organ was removed safely and are in healthy condition," added Morey.
