In its 429 page judgement, the apex court made some strong observations calling it a ‘rarest of rare’ crime that sparked nationwide outrage over violence against women in the country.
The four were convicted for raping and assaulting the 23-year-old paramedical student inside a moving bus on December 16, 2012 which led to her death 13 days later in a Singapore hospital.
The first option available with the convicts is that of a review petition that they can file with the apex court. The Supreme Court reserves the right to admit it or reject it.
Reacting to the verdict, defence lawyer AP Singh said that he was disappointed with the apex court saying ‘court can’t hang anyone just to send a strong message to the society’.
Reacting to the judgement, her father Badri Singh said that ‘the verdict is a victory for his family’.
The apex court observed that the case definitely meets the rarest of rare benchmark. “If ever a case called for hanging, this was it,” the bench said.
