Google Wallet launched for Android users in India: How to download it and what will happen to Google Pay?

Google has finally launched its much-speculated Wallet app in the Indian market and it is different from the existing Google Pay app.

Google has finally unleashed the most speculated Wallet app in the Indian market. It is said that the app will be different from Google Pay, said the officials. The Google Wallet app will allow smartphone users to make contactless payments using either- debit or credit cards.

According to PTI, Google has further introduced a private digital wallet for Android users in India, enabling them to store cards securely, keys, tickets, passes and IDs, an official.

Google Wallet is different from Google Pay

Google Wallet service is said to be different when compared to Google Pay. In the Wallet app, users will be able to store their credit cards, debit cards, gift cards etc. digitally. On the other hand, Google Pay is just for UPI transactions.

 
Google Wallet is only for Android 

Google Wallet in India is only available for Android users. This private digital wallet will enable them to store their important passwords and digital keys, which usually one tends to forget like- cards, tickets, passes, digital keys and IDs. The wallet app will be like Digilocker, which enables users to store financial documents digitally. The company has confirmed that the launch event took place today in New Delhi.

Rumoured launch of Wallet in April 2024

It was recently when many users in India declared that they saw the Google Wallet app on the Play Store and some further claimed that they downloaded it. However, later Google India confirmed that the news was not official. 

It was today when Google uncovered the news of Wallet services operational in India.

How will Google Wallet work?

According to the PTI report, users will be able to download Google Wallet from the Play Store and store their debit cards, credit cards, loyalty cards and gift cards on the platform. 

This wallet is said to differ from the already existing Google Pay in India, through which users can make UPI payments and recharge etc. 

Will GPay discontinue?

Despite of Google Wallet launch in India, Google Pay will continue to operate as a standalone app in India for UPI transactions.

Online payment without contact with Google Wallet

Google Wallet app will enable users to make online payments without contact as it works on the NFC (Near Field Communication) feature along the lines of Samsung's wallet. Besides this, the digital wallet will let the users add their debit and credit cards and create virtual cards as well. Apart from this, users will be able to digitally store gift cards, gym memberships, railway tickets, online tickets, flight tickets etc. in the Google Wallet app.

Automatically link with Google account

The wallet will be automatically linked to the Gmail account of Android users. 

Google’s partnership

Google has partnered with PVR-INOX, MakeMyTrip, Air India Express, Flipkart Supercoin, Air India, Pine Labs, Shopper Stop, Ixigo, Abhibus, Hyderabad metro, Twid, Billeasy, BMW, Wavelynx, Alert Enterprise, Prudent, Vijayanad Travels and more. 

The company will be partnering with more brands in the coming days.
