"Three people had come to meet (P. Chidambaram). It was part of a regular meeting," Tihar Jail Director General Sandeep Goyal told IANS. Chidambaram's son Karti Chidambaram was also among the visitors.
Karti highlighted that turning 74 is nothing compared to turning 100-days old, taking a dig at the BJP-led Central government which recently released a 100-day progress report. In his letter, Karti took subtle digs at the BJP-led government, citing various recent events. “You are 74 years old and no 56!!! Can stop you," he wrote.
The former Union Minister, born in 1945 in Kanadukathan in Sivaganga district of Tamil Nadu, is in judicial custody till September 19 in the INX Media corruption case that the Central Bureau of Investigation is probing.
The Enforcement Directorate had on Thursday told the court that Chidambaram's arrest was necessary in the INX Media money laundering case and it will do so at an appropriate time.
Senior advocates Kapil Sibal, Dayan Krishnan, Arshdeep Khurana and Salman Khurshid are to plead the case in court on behalf of Chidambaram.
In his application before the court, Chidambaram has argued that no public funds were involved in the case (INX Media case) and it is also not a case of bank fraud of taking money out of the county or defrauding depositors or stealing money from a company.
In a couple of his tweets, Chidambaram said that he doesn't want any official involved in the case to be arrested as they had done no wrong.
Congress leader Digvijaya Singh on Friday accused the BJP government at the Centre of implementing the "Gujarat Model of Governance" where innocents are framed in "false" cases. Singh said former finance minister and party colleague P Chidambaram, arrested in the INX Media corruption case and lodged in Tihar jail, has been falsely implicated.
Two weeks after he was arrested by the CBI over charges of money laundering and corruption in the INX Media case, he faces the toughest crisis of his career.
The Supreme Court on Thursday refused pre-arrest bail to P Chidambaram in the INX Media money laundering case lodged by the Enforcement Directorate. The top court dismissed Chidambaram's plea challenging the Delhi High Court verdict denying him anticipatory bail in the case.
The apex court asked Chidambaram's counsel not to press for the interim bail plea, which they had filed before the trial court on Monday and is scheduled to be heard during the day, till September 5.
The apex court said that if Chidambaram's request for interim bail is not considered by the trial court Monday itself, the CBI's custody of Chidambaram will be extended for three more days.
The order was passed by Special Judge Ajay Kumar Kuhar before whom Chidambaram was produced on expiry of four-day custodial interrogation granted on August 26.
Chidambaram, who was arrested on August 21, is in the CBI custody till Friday and will be produced before the concerned trial court on expiry of his remand.
In the high-profile INX Media case, Chidambaram is accused of facilitating foreign direct investment clearance in the company and is currently being investigated by the CBI and the ED.
A bench of Justices R Banumathi and A S Bopanna heard arguments advanced by Solicitor General Tushar Mehta who said that Chidambaram was trying to play "victim card" and prevent ED from exercising its right to arrest him in the case.
The Supreme Court is hearing a fresh plea filed by P Chidambaram challenging the trial court's order that remanded him to the custody of the Central Bureau of Investigation till August 26 in relation with the INX Media corruption case. They said the LRs, or judicial requests seeking information from foreign countries, have been sent to the United Kingdom, Mauritius, Switzerland, Bermuda and Singapore, they said.
However, Chidambaram will continue to be in custody as the apex court, did not intervene in the CBI case in which he has been sent for custodial interrogation of the agency till Monday.
