Agartala, Jan 31: Countering the allegation that they had links with insurgents, Opposition Congress yesterday alleged that it was CPI-M which gave birth to insurgency in Tripura.

"Congress ruled the state for 30 years when there was no insurgency but it grew in the state after CPI-M came to power in 1978," Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee President Sudip Roy Burman told a 'Meet the Press' function organised by Agartala Press Club.

"We challenged CPI(M)-led government and demanded setting up of an inquiry commission headed by a sitting Supreme Court judge to find out if any Congress leader was ever involved in fuelling insurgency. But the government did not concede to our demand," he said.

"The leaders of CPI-M had made a secret meeting with the surrendered insurgents at a village in Amarpur subdivision (Gomati district) a few months before the election was declared for using them in the polls," Burman said.

He alleged that the law department issued a circular last year asking Public Prosecutors and Asst Public Prosecutors to withdraw cases against 736 surrendered insurgents against whom 900 cases were pending in courts.

He alleged that CPI-M was bringing false allegations against Congress that it had links with the insurgents only to divert people's attention from the issues like unemployment, corruptions, nepotism, discrimination and partisan attitude of the government.
